Requirements for a Mathematics Major

Students are offered a choice of three plans.  Plan I provides a strong preparation in theoretical, proof-oriented mathematics.  Plan II is for students interested in the applications of mathematics.  Plan III is geared toward secondary education.

A mathematics minor is also available to students.  At least 17 hours in mathematics, including 240 and two courses numbered above 240 are required.

At least 24 hours, including 151, 152, 240, 321 and 365 are required for the second teaching area.  Computer science 150 and education 352 are required.


Plan I

240, 245, either 454 or 471, and three additional courses in the department numbered above 240 including at least one additional from 365, 454, 456, 459, 471, 472, but at most two from 321, 322, 327.  This plan provides a strong preparation in theoretical, proof-oriented mathematics.



Plan II 

240, 245, either 454 or 471, and four additional courses in the department numbered above 240.  This plan is for students interested in the applications of mathematics.



Plan III (teaching) 

A mathematics major plus computer science 150.   The mathematics major must include 321, 365, and 471.  Credit hours of required and elective mathematical courses must total a minimum of 30 hours.  See education department for secondary education program requirements.
